The name stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, GNU being what is referred to as a recursive acronym for GNU's no Unix, and is a free operating system like Unix, but containing no Unix code. What GNU means, however, is largely irrelevant to the normal person's use of Gimp, and since a free Gimp download is easy to get, the normal person uses it a lot.

It is a highly sophisticated application, and very much like the very expensive Adobe Photoshop in functionality.
